COVID-19 Vaccine and Booster Recommendations

The best way to protect yourself and others is to get vaccinated and boosted.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the use of four vaccines. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) prefers Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, and Novavax. Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna are mRNA vaccines. Novavax is a protein-based vaccine. You can also get Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine in some situations.

CDC recommends everyone ages 6 months and older receive primary series doses of the COVID-19 vaccine. Everyone ages 5 years and older can get an updated booster (which protects against Omicron and all its recent variants) dose.

CDC considers you “up to date” on vaccines when you receive all primary series doses and boosters when eligible. Recommendations depend on your age and health status. They may also depend on what vaccine you received, when you were fully vaccinated or if you recently had a COVID-19 infection.

Getting vaccinated can slow the spread of COVID-19.

Vaccines provide stronger protection from disease than the body’s immune system.
